Myths & Facts About Cancer

Clearing doubts with science & compassion – Dr. Akash Mor

Myth 1: Cancer is always a death sentence
Fact: Many cancers are curable if detected early (e.g., breast, cervical, testicular, thyroid, colorectal). Even advanced cancers can often be controlled with treatment, improving both survival and quality of life. So Early detection saves Life.
Myth 2: Cancer spreads if exposed to air during surgery
Fact: Surgery does not cause cancer to spread. In fact, surgery is often the best chance of cure. Advanced imaging and surgical techniques ensure safe removal without spreading.
Myth 3: Cancer is contagious
Fact: Cancer cannot spread from person to person. However, some viruses (HPV, Hepatitis B & C) can increase cancer risk, which is why vaccinations and safe practices are important. Cancer is Like other chronic diseases (DM, HTN); it does not spread from person to person while eating or sleeping together.
Myth 4: Only people with family history get cancer
Fact: While family history increases risk, most cancers occur in people with no family history. Lifestyle factors (diet, smoking, alcohol, infections, obesity) play a bigger role in many cases.
Myth 5: Herbal remedies or alternative treatments can cure cancer
Fact: No alternative therapy has been proven to cure cancer. Delaying standard treatment while relying only on alternative therapies can allow cancer to progress. Some complementary practices (yoga, meditation, diet, physiotherapy) help with side effects and quality of life, but they are not a cure.
Myth 6: Pain is the first sign of cancer
Fact: Many cancers in early stages are painless and symptomless. That’s why screening programs (like mammography, Pap smear, colonoscopy) are essential for early detection.
Myth 7: Cancer treatment is worse than the disease
Fact: Modern treatments are much safer and more effective than before. With better drugs, minimally invasive surgery, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and supportive care, side effects can be reduced significantly.
Myth 8: Positive thinking alone can cure cancer
Fact: Positive thinking helps improve mental health and coping, but medical treatment is necessary for cure or control. The best outcomes happen when patients combine positivity with evidence-based medicine.
Myth 9: Biopsy can spread cancer
Fact: Biopsy is a safe diagnostic tool and does not cause cancer to spread. Without a biopsy, doctors cannot confirm the type and stage of cancer for correct treatment.
Myth 10: Cancer always comes back
Fact: Many patients are cured permanently after treatment, especially when cancer is detected early. Even when it comes back, treatment options can still control it effectively.
